Dustin Klein, designer, artist and ex-messenger started Cadence with a no-nonsense, progressive approach to design and manufacturing products with purpose.
Cadence has a dedicated following in the cycling community since it was founded in 2003 for their thoughtful approach to lifestyle cycling apparel and originating the “cycling denim”.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
In 2002 while working as a bike messenger I had the thought: If there’s clothing for skateboarding why aren’t their clothing for messengers or lifestyle cyclist?
In 2003 I realized I needed to make things for a living. I started very small. 50 printed T shirts.
Taught myself How to screen print, How to use illustrator and Photoshop; built a shitty little web site, made a logo etc.. etc…
One step at a time.
WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE BRAND NAME?
Cadence is a term in cycling and in music. It means a constant rhythm. The word looked good and what it meant was perfect. Essentially named itself.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HURDLE YOU HAD TO OVERCOME TO GET STARTED?
There is no one large hurdle. There are a million little hurdles and tasks. For me it was about knowing where I wanted to go and doing all the little stuff that is in front of you to accomplish each goal. Slowly but surely things start getting done. One foot in front of the other.
WHAT WAS THAT “JUST DO IT” MOMENT FOR YOU TO GET STARTED?
I moved to SF in 2003(growing up in Fargo ND) I had never realized that people could make things for a living(art, design, brands, etc). Once I saw that was a possibility; I did everything in my power to make that a reality for me(knowing where you want to go).
Each step was one step closer to making that happen. It didn’t happen over night. It takes time., but it will happen if you are determined. Being resourceful has always been a strong attribute of mine. Working with what you have, Do what you can and Start from where you are.
